The ABR was started around 2001/2 as friendly rivalry between two anglers about how many species they caught in a single year.

In 2003 it was expanded to include any member of the Internet Angling Club Sea Fishing List who wanted to compete. A website was created and a small prize was awarded to the winner each year.

The rules are very simple:

Only boat caught fish are allowed

Any fish caught by any angler on the boat count

The boat must not be attached to any permanent structure (i.e tied to a wall/jetty etc) when fishing in the ABR

The boat must be launched from, or permanently moored at, a location on mainland Great Britain or immediate islands
